Kiwifruit budbreaker first to market for Zelam

Merchant reps have known the company had a budbreaker in development for at least the past two years, and they and their grower clients have been keen to put it to the test.

Called Advance Gold, the new product has also been evaluated as part of Zespri's ongoing research work to find new budbreakers for the industry, and it is now included in the Zespri Crop Protection Standard.

Zelam biotech business manager Stephen McKennie says Advance Gold is a first to market achievement by the Zelam technical team and provides an effective alternative to existing budbreaker technology in New Zealand.

Because the product is based on salicylic acid as the active ingredient, rather than hydrogen cyanamide, it has an excellent fit with growers and contractors spraying near sensitive areas, such as schools, parks, roads and houses.

“Safety precautions are more easily managed,” he explains. “When fully dry, Advance Gold does not carry any re-entry restrictions either.”

Combined with proven field efficacy, these safety attributes give the new brand potentially significant selling power in the budbreaker market, McKennie believes.

“We’re very excited about this. It’s been a difficult job – it’s a bit more challenging than developing a fungicide or a herbicide – but now it’s a reality.”

Advance Gold was officially rolled out to retailers at launch events in the Bay of Plenty mid April, giving technical reps time to brief their growers on it before the season of use.

McKennie says while it uses a different active ingredient, users won’t have to change their existing methods to adapt to it. The product can be used through existing sprayer set-ups that are fitted with air inclusion (A.I.) nozzles, used for applying budbreakers.

“When it comes to application it is a twocomponent mix, both of which are soluble concentrate (SL) formulations. Advance Gold is added to the tank first, followed by Advance Gold Activator. This contains a unique combination of nitrogen and calcium salt, plus other adjuvants. The concentration of both components has been optimised and it’s the combination of the two that delivers effective uptake and activity.”

Applied to Gold3 as a bud break management tool, Advance Gold plus the activator will usually increase the bud break, make the timing of bud break more uniform, condense flowering, increase flower numbers and reduce laterals and flats.

Mix rates are 3 litres per 100 litres for Advance Gold and 12 L per 100 L for Advance Gold Activator but typical application rates are similar, i.e. 700 L per ha of solution on pruned, tied down canes.

Growers can apply the new product with the same sprayer set-up with air induction nozzles. The recommended application timing is 35 days before natural bud break, plus or minus seven days.

Applications made more than seven days earlier or later than 35 days before natural bud break may be less effective.

“Bud break is predicted by local best practice, taking into account winter chill and local knowledge for Gold3 on the grower’s orchard. Modern gene expression monitoring tests may help with the optimum timing decision.”
